Photon sensing devices convert infrared energy or photons into electrons. Photon detectors typically operate at very cold temperatures, requiring cryogenic cooling, but offering extremely high performance imaging. The detector is much more sensitive than traditional uncooled thermal imaging detectors, offering the ability to provide, clear, crisp details in the image and long range detection.

Unlike thermal detectors, photon detectors do not rely on the conversion of incoming radiation to heat. Photon detectors instead convert incoming photons directly into an electrical signal.
